Imagine handing every AI model — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI — a one-page cheat sheet about your business. What you do, where you are, what pages matter, and how to describe you. That's exactly what llms.txt does.

And creating one takes less than 10 minutes.

What Exactly is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain text file you place at the root of your website — right next to robots.txt. It uses Markdown formatting to describe your business in a way that large language models can ingest quickly and accurately.

Think of it as the difference between handing someone your business card versus making them dig through your entire website to figure out what you do. The business card wins every time.

The format was proposed by Jeremy Howard (co-founder of fast.ai, founding researcher at Hugging Face) as part of the llmstxt.org specification. It's now being adopted by thousands of businesses worldwide.

What Does an llms.txt File Look Like?

Here's a real example — the actual llms.txt from a Houston-based service business:

Why Your Business Needs an llms.txt File

1. AI Models Use It as a Primary Source of Truth

When ChatGPT or Claude encounters an llms.txt file, it treats it as the authoritative summary of what your business is. This means AI will describe your services correctly, cite your prices accurately, and recommend you for relevant queries — instead of guessing.

2. It Takes 10 Minutes to Create

You don't need a developer. You don't need to rebuild your website. You literally create a text file, write in plain English what your business does, and upload it to your website root. That's it.

3. It Works Across All Major AI Platforms

Unlike SEO tricks that work only on Google, llms.txt works on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Apple Intelligence, and any future AI model that accesses the web. It's platform-agnostic by design.

4. It's Free

Zero cost. No subscription. No proprietary format. Just a text file on your server.

How to Create Your llms.txt — Step by Step

Step 1: Open a Text Editor

Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code — anything that saves plain .txt files. No Word, no Google Docs.

Step 2: Start with Your Business Name

Use a Markdown H1 heading:

# Your Business Name

Step 3: Add a One-Sentence Description

Use a Markdown blockquote:

> What your business does, in one clear sentence.

Step 4: Add Sections with H2 Headings

Include at minimum: What we do, Services, Key pages, Contact. Use Markdown lists for services and key pages. Make sure all links are absolute URLs (e.g., https://yourbusiness.com/services, not /services).

Step 5: Upload to Your Website Root

The file must be accessible at:

https://yourbusiness.com/llms.txt

Upload it via FTP, cPanel, or ask your web developer to place it in the root directory of your site — the same place where your homepage index.html lives.

Step 6: Verify It Works

Open a browser and go to https://yourbusiness.com/llms.txt. If you see your text file, it's live. AI models can now read it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using relative URLs — Always use full https:// URLs for every link
  • Writing a novel — Keep it under 200 lines. AI models process shorter files more reliably
  • Skipping the contact section — AI needs to know how customers reach you
  • Using PDF or HTML format — Must be plain text (text/plain)
  • Forgetting to update it — If your services or prices change, update your llms.txt

llms.txt vs llms-full.txt: What's the Difference?

The spec supports two files:

  • llms.txt — A concise summary for quick AI ingestion (aim for 100–200 lines)
  • llms-full.txt — Extended, detailed information with full service descriptions, technical architecture, and pricing detail

Start with llms.txt. Add llms-full.txt when you're ready for deeper AI integration.
